Catch and release

Trial 2017/2018 club season

As discussed at the AGM the club has decided to allow Snapper and Kingfish to be measured, photographed and released as part of our annual trophies. This will be trialled this season for club trophies including angler of the year.

The main reason for this approach is so that anglers will have the option of releasing a fish and still getting the credit for it without having to kill it. One of the key principles of our club is responsible and sustainable fishing practices. To that end it seemed like this innovation is a no brainer.

How it works

The same rules apply as in our fishing tournaments. The fish must be photographed lying on an approved measuring device (such as a brag mat or similar). The fish’s nose and tail must be clearly visible it the picture, as well as the length on the measuring device (check the picture; if in doubt take another one). The length of the fish is measured from the tip of the nose (mouth closed) to the V in its tail.

The weight will then be calculated based on the length of the fish. Below are basic tables that will give you some idea of the conversion.

The trial begins immediately and will be reviewed at the end of the season.
